This week I have focused on fixing the elements of the tiger walk cycle, that I did not like. I got some critiques that the head of the tiger is moving too much and I completely agreed with that. I thought the head not only looked like it was hitting a wall, but also was moving way too much compared to the reference video. At first, I wanted to fix the keyframes that I have already put in to make the movement more gentle and less visible, but it was quite problematic, because I accidentally out rotations on a few different controls and because of that, it was hard to decide where were the rotations what caused the issues.
Because I struggled to put the head in a neutral position due to all the rotations, I decided to completely delete all the rotations from both the shoulders and neck - so all rotations that could possibly affect the head. With all the paw movements and hip movements that I was happy with, I started working on the head "from scratch". I decided to move it much less and try to make the shoulder twists a lot less exaggerated. was very happy I decided to go back and start this part over, I think doing it this way was not only more efficient but also let me study the tiger's head again with a fresh perspective - not trying to fix something I have already done.
Here are gifs of the animation of the walk cycle. I am quite happy with this exercise and definitely now want to move on to animating a different animal:
As I have mentioned, I am gladly moving on from the tiger - and now ready to explore a dog.
For the dog animation, I personally feel like I need to do something more expressive than a mechanically correct walk cycle. I want my character to have a personality. For that reason, I decided to use the Douglas the Corgi rig, that I have already found last semester.
This rig, is however very complicated - I get confused just by looking at it:
I found on youtube a video explaining how this rig works, so I believe that will be very helpful for me to get around this rig somehow.
For this animation, someone has used the same rig I am planning on using which I think will be helpful for me.
Here is also more anatomical sheet defining keyframes of a walk cycle of a dog:
I am still full willing to make any changes in the tiger walk cycle, but I am mostly thinking of moving on to the dog walk cycle.
